Awesome upgrade from the first Fisher Price Kid tough

Fisher Price Kid Tough Yourself Camera Purple

Fisher Price Kid Tough Yourself Camera Purple

We decided to send one of these cameras to each of our FIVE grandkids for X-Mas 2011. This one for the girls and the black/white for the boys. They were truely a hit!!

Three went to the same house in Tulsa, OK; two girls, 7 and 9 years, and a boy, 3 years old, who is particularly rough on everything. His camera has been used as a 'hammer' and it still works fine. The kids immediately began shooting pics and videos. They loved the on-screen things they could do, like put 'hats' on their Guinea pig, 'horns' on their Mom, etc. They also loved flipping the lens for 'self-portraits'.

My daughter entered the living room and thought it was a paparazzi ambush....clickety, clickety, click. Too Funny! Their sweet little neighbor girl didn't get one for X-Mas; so, we sent one to her, too. Another happy camper! That makes six cameras.

One went to a 5 year old in Phoenix, AZ, who is using it to illustrate his own homemade books; and, he's producing his own videos, too. Little genius!

Now, we have two little B-Days in our neighborhood, and that means two more cameras. We're up to eight cameras, now!

Regarding people's comments on poor picture quality: Hey, it's a toy!! And, we have yet to hear a single complaint from ANY of these kids. To the contrary, we received phone calls from excited children who abandoned their other gifts to explore their world with these great cameras. I just got off the phone with my daugher; and my I.T. son-in-law remarked that the picture and video quality is excellent; so, if there were problems, they must've been corrected. No recharging problems, as they use 4 AA batteries, which are easily replaced.

I also give the 'frustration-free' packaging a 5-star rating. Just open, point and shoot! There's nothing worse than struggling to cut open those plastic clamshell thingies and cut yourself in the process.

If you wonder why we dropped all of this money on these, just think back about spending twice the dough on toys that lasted only a week. I highly recommend this product.

  1. So, my daugther loves to takes pix with my camera or iphone. So she was ecstatic about having her own camera. She has fun time taking pix of everything. Camera itself is very easy to use and durable. She's dropped it around the house numerous times and still works like new. The camera can be moved to take pix from the front or the back. I havne't used the software yet, so can't say anything about that. The camera itself has a few pix editing features which are entertaining at first, but my daughter doesnt' seem to care for it much. Anyways, great camera for kids to own.

  2. I bought the original Fisher Price Kid tough camera when they came and here is why this is an awesome upgrade. The viewfinder rotates to take self portraits, my son who is always trying to make videos of himself and videos with his friends can now do so without his mother having a heart attack when he uses my camera. The software for the Fisher Price camera this time around has fun stuff for the kids to add to the pictures. The previous software had none of that. This camera zooms. The old ones did not.

I can speak from experience that this babies can take a licking! First day out, my son dropped his down the stairs, two flights of stairs, one of them was a set of concrete stairs. The camera was in fine working order after it's amazing journey down the stairs.

I will be honest, I have always hated those screw down safety battery doors, I know they are necessary for the safety of our children, but I wish there was another way.

I am really excited about the advancement with this camera. I also gave this camera to my 9 year old son - I know he's above the age limit, but my ex-husband thought he could handle the responsibility of a real digital camera and that hit the pavement and died the same day, so I stick to kid tough.

  3. This is a 'real' camera, albeit not the highest-end one out there. But that's fine for what it is. It's easy to use, and gives a decent photo. After going over it myself, I had my grandson try it. Now, the age for this is 3-6, and my grandson is just a bit over 2, but his mother is a professional photographer (as am I), so he 'gets' what taking a photo is all about.

He found the flip over lens fascinating- and I agree, what a great design! It allows the child to see him or herself in the viewfinder and take his/her own photo! He immediately started taking photos around the house and outside. He didn't quite get the need to have the image in the viewfinder, but that is something that I feel is due to his younger than targeted age, and it's a matter of learning how to use a camera. He was thrilled with it and managed to get several usable/saveable shots on his first try.

Going over the camera, the design is quite good. It was a little too easy to delete shots - simply pressing the trashcan/X button twice while previewing the image does it. It's truly sturdily built - I believe it will withstand being dropped without any problems. The movie feature is also nice, though the volume on playback was quite low. I didn't upload any video to the computer, so it may be much louder once uploaded, but did upload several photos to see how they held up once on my computer. They were okay. Colors were reasonably good. Exposures were a bit over-sensitive, meaning the darkest areas were pretty dark and the lightest areas were bleached out. However, although this happened, it was not excessive, and in a less contrasty space, doesn't happen too much. The quality is as good as my -old- cell-phone images.

The zoom works okay, but a couple times I had to turn off and then on again to get it to 'reset' to the normal focal length. And the same button also regulates reviewing the shots you've taken, so sometimes the camera reacted by switching to the wrong feature. If you wait a couple seconds, though, it switches back.

The cartoon 'add-ins' will likely delight children using it. To get them to 'work' you do need to take a centered image, but that's something that will help teach a child how to compose, so it's a good feature.

The shutter button is on top, just as on a 'real' camera. There's also a stop button which is used to stop video filming, but the shutter also toggles for the same thing, so it's a bit extraneous. All the buttons emit a sound when being pressed, so the child can tell what s/he's doing.

The camera has a bit of weight to it, after all, it has some sophisticated electonics inside, but it was easy for my grandson to hold and use. Besides having internal memory, you can add a compact flash card - up to 32 gigabytes! Which is huge!

Now, because I am a professional photographer, I am VERY picky, and my comments do reflect that. I must add, however, that this is a GREAT mix between a toy and a real camera and these are minor criticisms, so, I heartily recommend this camera. I do think it's more appropriate for a bit older than my grandson, but that's exactly what Fisher-Price says - ages 3-6, so I can't fault that at all, just say that it's true to its advertising. I'm eager to see how he grows with it.

  4. My 2 boys ages 3 and 4 both received one for Christmas, so 5 months later these cameras have withheld a lot. My kids enjoy the video recording so much we practically use them every day. I even will make my boys a secret video from me then let them discover it when they use it next, it is totally awesome. I also use it to video them outside riding their power wheels vehicles and I'll run behind them to keep up and I've never had any problems with the motion, so this camera definitley gets 5 Stars from me and my boys. I do recommend buying a memory card otherwise you'll have to delete after I believe 5 minutes of videos, so that's not good. I purchased a memory card from Amazon for both cameras for like $5 a piece! It is well worth it!

  6. My six-year-old grandson now calls himself a photographer, thanks to this camera. He's getting pretty good at picture taking, actually. And thanks to the swivel lens, he can take pictures of his favorite subject, himself.

The camera does not come with a USB cable, but we had one that fit. And you need an SD card if you want your child or grandchild to be able to take more than a few pictures or use video. Fortunately, we've got quite a few SD cards in my house, so that wasn't a problem either, but if you don't have these things, they'll add a few bucks to the price.

Now for the happiness factor. It's a ten our of ten. My grandson and his friends spend gobs of time with this camera and they are all enjoying the heck out of it. How can I give it any less than five stars.
