GoPro CHDHN 301 HERO3 Silver Edition

GoPro CHDHN 301 HERO3 Silver Edition

I'm a professional videographer and photographer so I'm used to the technical aspects of setting up cameras. However, this was a cinch. I followed the directions to set up the camera and apply the software update from the web site and have had NO issues at all with this camera. Photos, video, wifi remote, all works fine as advertised. I also am able to hook up my camera and suck it all into my Apple iMac without a hitch. I've only had it a few days so I'll update when I work with the photos and videos more and kick the camera around a bit. This is a SMALL camera and I'm going to love keeping this in my pocket in addition to using it for POV and aerial applications. The low cost vs. high quality of this unit is hard to beat.

I have now had an issue with this camera shutting off on its own in video mode. My card appears to exceed specs so I don't think it's incompatible but it may be some card issue or there's still some bugs in this software. Will research this issue further and report back. Eventually all videos stop on their own.

  1. I received my GoPro yesterday. I was almost going to hit the "Purchase" button with the Wasabi Power 2 battery packs + charger, and SanDisk 32GB card, UNTIL I came across a post suggesting the SanDisk card might be causing the freezing up.

The poster said to use Transcend instead. I also heard that 64GB cards heat up the camera, so I decided to purchase the Transcend 32GB MicroSDHC Class 10 UHS-1 card.

I opened up the packages and started charging all of the batteries (GoPro via wall-wart I already had, Wasabi power, and the wi-fi remote.

That took a little bit of time. Once everything was charged up, I stuck my memory card in my mac and formatted it with exFat. I followed the instructions on how to MANUALLY install the firmware update (Despite it having it on there). I also decided to go ahead and change the camera name and wi-fi password (Part of the firmware upgrade process).

Once that was finished, I transferred all files to the memory card, and stuck it in the camera. I turned on the camera and it started to update the firmware and wi-fi settings.

After it was done, it turned off. I turned it back on and quickly went to the "Trash Can" icon, and selected ALL (To wipe the whole memory card).

From what I have read, the camera doesn't format the card, it just erases the card contents (Not verified). After it was finished erasing, I was off to program the settings in the camera via the GoPro App. The App is much easier to set up the settings instead of programming it via the camera buttons.

The GoPro App works great! I just use it to line up the shot and then turn preview off and control the camera (To preserve battery). The wi-fi remote works great as well. It mimics the camera LCD screen, and have full control over the camera. There are reports that the battery will last a bit longer with the wi-fi remote vs. GoPro App.

I HIGHLY suggest in getting extra batteries/charger. It does eat batteries, but it's processing a lot of information!! The Wasabi Power 2-battery pack/charger works great! I have heard that this battery doesn't last much longer than the original battery. That's fine! I have 2 FULL spare batteries ready to go. Plus, the price is right.

The camera takes BEAUTIFUL pictures (12MP), and stunning video!! You have full control of the resolutions and other aspects to contour the camera to your liking/shot.

I plan on updating my review down the road.

UPDATE: I forgot to mention that I read that when people charge the camera via USB cable hooked up to their computer, I decided to not hook up the camera to charge it that way. When I need to charge the camera, I pull the battery out. When I need to pull off videos/pictures, I pull the memory card out. Simple and easy fix. I have been playing with the camera all day taking different pictures/videos without the camera locking up/freezing. I know YMMV. Hopefully this will help others.

  2. I was afraid that the gopro was gonna be glitchy when i saw all the horrible reviews. But im so happy about my camera. Is so crisp and clear and works great. Make sure you get a big memory card because high quality stuff like the gopro catches takes alot of memory

  3. I have used it with the quadcopter many times without any issues. I have a lot of videos and picture from the air. Most of the time I use 1080p 60fps mode. I get good video and good pictures by capturing the right frames. Great product!

  4. It is so small, and it has amazing vibration dampening. I strapped this onto my quadrocopter and it works really well as a way of creating amazing movie scenes. It is also very robust. My quadrocopter did a free-fall from 8000 feet, landed in a 50 foot cedar tree. The GoPro fell to the ground and was still recording when I found it !!

  6. I have had the GoPro Hero3 White Edition for several months now and it has been very good. The video quality is great at 1080p 30fps. Its is awesome how limitless the camera mounting options are for it. The only problem that I have had is camera freeze-ups. When that first happened I went to gopro.com/support for help. There I found that camera freeze-ups can happen when the camera isn't updated. I updated it but it still happened. I contacted gopro about it and in less than 24 hours they emailed me back telling me to try the updated again. I did it and the camera has since worked great. From snowboarding to skateboarding and pool fun you can capture it all. The size and weight make it a great camera to carry around with you. With the LCD touchscreen bacpac its just like a regular cam. I recommend it to all outdoor enthusiasts. To all the people who are looking for a normal camera, this is not it. It is much more. As for the battery life: yes, it can drain fast at times but it is a small battery though. For that I recommend the battery bacpac. You can also buying the Wi-Fi remote to control the camera. At $199.99 for the White Edition its a good price too. In the end I give it two thumps up.
